The 4709 TB / 54TN Big Box Set—also known as the "Joel Foy" set—is one of Don Mare’s most requested combinations, favored by returning customers for its rich tone and vintage responsiveness. Designed for early blues, rockabilly, and classic rock styles, it delivers clear articulation and a naturally sweet top end with no harshness.

The 4709 TB bridge pickup is a flat-pole Alnico III design wound to approx. 6.0k. It’s twangy, steely, and dynamic, with a tight low end, focused mids, and smooth highs—ideal for players who want bite and definition without any “ice pick” sharpness.

The 54TN neck pickup uses Alnico V magnets and approx. 8000 turns of 43 AWG plain enamel wire, reading around 6.3k. It includes a nickel silver/chrome-plated cover for improved transparency and clarity in the upper register.

This set uses Don Mare’s Big Box construction, which features a larger bobbin design. This contributes to a more open, resonant tone with increased harmonic content and sustain compared to standard-sized windings.
